What is a PPO plan?

A PPO — Preferred Provider Organization — is a type of health plan built around flexibility. You get a large network of doctors and hospitals at lower in-network rates, but you're also free to see providers outside the network, usually at a higher share of cost. Unlike many HMO plans, you don't need to pick a primary care physician or get a referral to see a specialist.

Why people choose a PPO

Choose your own doctors

Keep the doctors you trust and add new ones — in-network for the best rate, with out-of-network options when it matters.

Usually no referrals

With most PPO plans you can go straight to a specialist — no waiting on a primary-care sign-off first.

Care when you travel

Large national networks plus out-of-network options mean you're more likely to find covered care away from home — networks vary by plan.

Flexibility when life happens

Out-of-network coverage gives you options in an emergency or when the right specialist isn't in-network.

Is a PPO right for you?

A PPO tends to fit people who want choice and don't want to be boxed into one network — those who travel, have established relationships with specific doctors, or want the freedom to seek care without jumping through hoops. The trade-off is usually a higher premium than a more restrictive plan. Whether it's the right fit depends on your health, your budget, and what's available in your state — which is exactly what a licensed agent can help you sort out, at no cost.
